Mayor Turk and his wife Barbara were both reared in the United States Air Force. The hardest question for a Military “Brat” to answer is: “Where are you from?” Blanding is home by choice – made with an awareness of the larger world. During 2012 they are celebrating fifty-two years of marriage. During this time they have visited together all fifty states, all seven continents and over sixty nations.
Mayor Turk is a veteran of the United States Army. He served as a Russian Voice Intercept Operator and Transcriber during the Berlin Wall and Cuban Missile crises. He also served as an Aerial Photography Interpreter with the Defense Intelligence Agency during the Vietnam War.
Dr. Turk’s professional career in education spanned forty-two years. He was awarded Associate Professor Rank by Western Texas College and spent thirty years as an administrator in public education. At the point of his initial retirement he was an Area Superintendent with the Austin Independent School District in Texas. A second retirement was from the San Juan School District where he was their Federal Programs Director for twelve years and also served as an adjunct lecturer with Utah State University for “Diversity in Education.” During this period he oversaw the development and implementation of the District’s Navajo and Ute languages and cultural curricula for grades K-12. His doctoral dissertation was Navajo-English Bilingual/Bicultural Education: an Evaluation.
Mayor Turk has served as the mayor of Blanding since 2004. He serves on the Advisory Council for San Juan County Higher Education and chairs Transitions – a program for special needs adults. He is the founder of the Blanding Rotary Club. He and his wife are the parents of three sons, grandparents to thirteen and great-grandparents to thirteen.
